Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act
We here at Commercial Aquatic Services, Inc. want to make sure all of our pool and spa customers are aware of the requirements of the recently passed Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (VGB). There’s more to the VGB Safety Act then just replacing the drain covers. Most of the covers that are available to date have lower flow rates then your covers that are in place now. For example, removing an old 12” x 12” drain grate cover that has a flow rate of 401 GPM and installing a new VGB compliant drain cover with a flow rate of 218 GPM is not in balance hydraulically for the possible flow demand through the cover. This would cause the velocity to increase through the cover, exceeding the manufacturers max flow design and increasing the possibility for entrapment. It’s imperative to have your facility hydraulically certified that it is in compliance with Federal requirements.
